Early Life and Education

Muhammad Munir was born into a distinguished Maldivian family, with his father serving as the future Minister of Justice and Attorney General. He pursued his education at Cairo's Al-Azhar University, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Islamic theology in 1967. Munir went on to complete his postgraduate studies at Ain Shams University in Cairo.

Diplomatic Career

In 1974, Munir completed a course in international relations at the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs. His diplomatic career began as a teacher at Majeediyya School from 1969 to 1973. He subsequently served as Deputy Undersecretary for International Organizations and Foreign Aid at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 1973 to 1976. During this period, he briefly held the position of Acting Deputy Undersecretary at the Ministry of Transport in 1975.

Rise to Foreign Minister

Munir's rise to the top of the diplomatic ranks was marked by his appointment as Deputy Foreign Minister from 1976 to 1977. In 1977, he became the Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the United Nations. His tenure as Foreign Minister of the Maldives spanned from 1978 to 2005, a period of nearly three decades.

Concurrently Held Positions

Alongside his role as Foreign Minister, Munir held additional cabinet portfolios. From 1982 to 1983 and 1990 to 1991, he served as Minister of Planning and Environmental Protection. In 1989, he became one of the members of parliament appointed by the President.

Post-Foreign Minister Years

Upon retiring as Foreign Minister in 2005, Munir was appointed as Special Advisor to the President of the Maldives. In 2008, President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom bestowed upon him the honor of Senior Minister.
