Biography of Abdul Rahman
Abdul Rahman was the first Prime Minister of independent Malaysia. He was born on August 11, 1903, in Alor Setar, Kedah, Malaysia.
Leadership in Political Organizations
In 1951, Abdul Rahman became the leader of the United Malays National Organization (UMNO), which represented the Malay community in the country. Under his leadership, UMNO merged with the Malayan Chinese Association and the Malayan Indian Congress in 1955 to form the Alliance Party of Malaysia, with Abdul Rahman as its chairman.
Prime Minister of Independent Malaysia
After the Alliance Party's victory in the 1955 parliamentary elections, Abdul Rahman became the Chief Minister and Minister of Internal Affairs of the Federation of Malaya. When Malaysia declared independence on August 31, 1957, he remained at the helm of the government, holding the positions of Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Federation of Malaya (later Malaysia from 1963).
Formation of Malaysia
In 1961, Abdul Rahman proposed the plan for the formation of Malaysia, which aimed to unite the Federation of Malaya with the British colonies of Singapore, Sabah, Sarawak, and Brunei. The merger took place on September 16, 1963, although Brunei did not participate and Singapore later withdrew from the federation on August 9, 1965.
ASEAN and Internal Conflicts
Abdul Rahman played a significant role in the establishment of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in 1967, with Malaysia being one of its founding members. However, in the mid-1960s, there were heightened interethnic conflicts in the country, particularly with the enactment of the Language Act in 1967, which designated Malay as the official language. These conflicts led to ethnic clashes in 1969 and the declaration of a state of emergency. Power effectively shifted from the government to the National Operations Council led by Deputy Prime Minister Abdul Razak, who later assumed the role of Prime Minister in 1970.
