As a student in 1975, Bouphavanh actively took part in the armed revolution led by the Pathet Lao forces, which were socialist-oriented military-political forces in Laos. This revolution marked a significant turning point in his political career.

From 1986 to 1990, Bouphavanh pursued further education in the Soviet Union. His studies in the Soviet Union were considered a major achievement in Laos, and upon his return from Moscow, he became one of the leaders of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party. He advocated for cooperation with China, and many believe that Bouphavanh became a protégé of Khamtai Siphandon, a prominent revolutionary figure in the country and the President of Laos until 2006.

In 2006, after the victory of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party in the elections for the National Assembly of Laos, Bouasone Bouphavanh was appointed as the Prime Minister. Prior to this, he held the position of Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the State Planning Committee of Laos since 2003.
