Early Life and Family
Grandson of Legendary Watchmaker, Son of World Champion SwimmerValeri Bure was born on June 13, 1974, in Minsk, Belarus. As the great-grandson of famous watchmaker Pavel Bure, grandson of renowned swimming coach Valeri Bure, and son of swimming world record holder and hockey coach Vladimir Bure, Valeri was destined for sporting greatness.
Hockey Prodigy
Skates on at Age Six, Coached by FatherAt the tender age of six, Valeri and his older brother Pavel stepped onto the ice with their father guiding their training. Despite their father's departure in 1983, the brothers continued their intense training regimen, with Valeri showing exceptional promise. He played for CSKA Moscow, joined the youth national team, and made his debut in the top league in 1990.
NHL Journey Begins
Draft to Spokane Chiefs, Move to MontrealIn 1991, following the August coup in Moscow, Valeri relocated to the United States with his family. He joined the Spokane Chiefs of the Western Hockey League (WHL) as a right winger. In 1994, he made his NHL debut with the Montreal Canadiens, where he played for four seasons.
Love and Tragedy
Marriage to American Actress Candace CameronDuring his time in Montreal, Valeri met and married American actress Candace Cameron in 1996. However, his hockey career was marred by injuries, including two concussions and kidney damage.
Rise of the 'Pocket Rocket'
Breakthrough with Calgary Flames, Olympic GloryIn 1997, Valeri was traded to the Calgary Flames. He excelled in Calgary, scoring 105 goals and 125 assists in 244 games. He earned the nickname "the pocket rocket" and became a father to daughter Natasha in 1998. In 1998, he also represented Russia at the Olympics in Nagano, winning a silver medal.
Playing with Brother Pavel
Joined Russian Trio in FloridaIn 2001, Valeri joined his brother Pavel and Viktor Kozlov in the "Russian trio" of the Florida Panthers. Their chemistry was remarkable, and Valeri continued to shine, earning numerous accolades.
Injuries and Triumph
Olympic Bronze, Health ConcernsDespite his success, injuries plagued Valeri throughout his career. In 2002, he helped Russia win a bronze medal at the Olympics in Salt Lake City. However, the subsequent surgery on his foot did not fully restore his health. He played limited games with the St. Louis Blues and returned to the Panthers, but injuries forced him to retire in 2004.
Coaching Legacy
Assistant Coach for Los Angeles KingsSince 2006, Valeri has served as an assistant coach for the Los Angeles Kings' youth hockey team. He has passed on the Bure legacy to the next generation, continuing the family tradition of excellence in the sport of hockey.
