Early Life and Career
Sonnenthal's journey began as a humble tailor. However, his talent and passion for the stage led him to seek guidance from the renowned actor Friedrich Davison. Under Davison's mentorship, Sonnenthal made his theatrical debut in 1851.
Association with the Burgtheater
Soon after his debut, Sonnenthal was invited to join the prestigious Vienna Burgtheater by its director, Heinrich Laube. He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming a director, then chief director, and finally, from 1881 until 1888, the theater's director.
Versatile Talent
Sonnenthal possessed exceptional versatility, excelling in both classical and contemporary roles. His most celebrated performances included Hamlet, Mortimer (in Schiller's "Maria Stuart"), Narziss (in Brachvogel's "Narziss"), Posa (in Schiller's "Don Carlos"), Faust, and Tell.
