Afonsinho: A Defensive Stalwart and National Team Star
Afonsinho, born in Rio de Janeiro, began his professional football career with his hometown club, America, in 1931. His debut season proved successful, as America lifted the Rio State Championship title.
Time at Flamengo
After an underwhelming season with America in 1932, Afonsinho joined Flamengo, the runners-up in the previous Rio State Championship. Despite a disrupted first season due to a boycott from several teams, Flamengo secured a respectable sixth-place finish in their second campaign with Afonsinho.
Defensive Rock at São Cristóvão
In 1935, Afonsinho moved to São Cristóvão, where he spent five seasons as a defensive linchpin. His solid performances at club level earned him a call-up to the Brazilian national team, making his debut against Peru in 1936.
National Team Success
Capped twenty times for Brazil, Afonsinho represented his country at the 1938 FIFA World Cup in France. He featured in three matches, including the third-place play-off against Italy.
Later Career with Fluminense
Afonsinho joined Fluminense in 1940, where he played until his retirement in 1946. He guided the club to three Rio State Championships and additional podium finishes during his time there.
