Early Life and Career

Ahmed Qurei (Abu Ala)was born in 1937 in a wealthy family in the郊外 of East Jerusalem. He pursued a career in banking before joining Yasser Arafat's Fatah movement in 1968. Within Fatah, Qurei served as the director of its financial department.

Role in the Oslo Accords

In the early 1990s, Qurei played a pivotal role in the Oslo Accords negotiations with Israel, which resulted in the establishment of the Palestinian Authority. He served as a key negotiator and helped secure important concessions.

Appointment as Palestinian Prime Minister

Following the resignation of Mahmoud Abbas as Prime Minister of the Palestinian Authority in 2003, Yasser Arafat appointed Qurei to succeed him. Qurei was seen as a close confidant of Arafat and was expected to carry out his policies faithfully.

Political Career in the Palestinian Authority

As Prime Minister, Qurei held various ministerial positions, including Minister of Trade and Minister of Industry. He was also a professor and underwent a significant heart surgery the previous year.
