Early Life and Career
Denys Anatoliyovych Shmyhal was born on September 15, 1975, in Lviv, Ukraine. In 1997, he graduated from the Lviv Polytechnic National University with a degree in Industrial Management (Mechanical Engineering). In 2003, he obtained a PhD in Economics from the Institute of Regional Research of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.
Shmyhal began his career in 1994 as a manager at Okeu LLC. He subsequently held various accounting and finance-related positions at Elektronbank and Lviv Bus Plant. From 1999 to 2003, he served as Chief Accountant and Director of Finance at La Dis LLC.
Government Service
In 2009, Shmyhal joined the Lviv Regional State Administration as an Assistant to the Chairman. He later became Acting Head of the Main Department of Economics and Head of the same department. In 2012, he was appointed Head of the Main Department of Economics and Industrial Policy.
In 2013, Shmyhal became Director of the Department of Economic Development, Investments, Trade, and Industry at the Lviv Regional State Administration. He also served as Assistant-Consultant to a Member of the Ukrainian Parliament.
Political Ambitions
Shmyhal has been politically active since 2014, when he ran as an independent candidate in the parliamentary elections. In 2015, he contested the elections for the Lviv Regional Council as a member of the "People's Control" party.
In 2019, Shmyhal ran for the post of Chairman of the Lviv Regional State Administration. He was ultimately appointed to the position in August of the same year.
Premiership
On March 4, 2020, Shmyhal was appointed Prime Minister of Ukraine by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. He has led the country through the COVID-19 pandemic and implemented significant economic reforms.
