Aila Pekonen: A Trailblazer in Finnish Politics
Aila Pekonen is a Finnish politician who has served as a Member of Parliament (MP) since 2011 for the Left Alliance party. She previously held the position of Minister of Social Affairs and Health from 2019 to 2021.
Early Life and Education
Pekonen was born on January 24, 1979, in Riihimäki, Finland, to Rauli and Eeri Hirviniemi, active politicians in the Left Alliance. In 2000, she completed her vocational education as a nurse and worked in the profession. She also gained experience as a salesperson and housing advisor.
Journey to Parliament
Pekonen first ran unsuccessfully for Parliament in the 2007 general election and the 2009 European Parliament election. However, she was elected to the Finnish Parliament in 2011. She served as the Chair of the Left Alliance Parliamentary Group and the Social Affairs and Health Committee.
Ministerial Tenure
On June 6, 2019, Pekonen was appointed Minister of Social Affairs and Health in the Rinne government. One of her first acts was to prepare legislation to repeal the so-called "active model for the unemployed." She continued in this role in the Marin cabinet, starting December 10, 2019.
Personal Life
Pekonen's parents, Rauli and Eeri Hirviniemi, were active members of the Left Alliance. Her brother, Aku Hirviniemi (born 1983), is a renowned Finnish actor. Pekonen married Henri Mikael Pekonen in 2003, and they have three sons: Toivo, Väinö, and Unto.
