Ainur Kurmanov: A Leading Voice for the Left in Kazakhstan

Ainur Kurmanov is a prominent Kazakhstani politician, social activist, and journalist who has dedicated his life to advocating for the rights of the working class and the marginalized.

Early Life and Activism

Kurmanov was born into a working-class family in Kazakhstan. In 1992, he joined the unregistered Communist Party of Kazakhstan. He later enrolled at the Saratov State University in Russia, where he studied history. During this time, he worked as a lathe operator and milling machine operator at the Ural "Metallist" factory.

In 1994, Kurmanov became involved in the "Solidarity" labor movement and the Committee for Workers' International. He was arrested in 1997 for distributing leaflets and painting anti-presidential slogans on walls. He spent six months in prison and was sentenced to a suspended one-year sentence for insulting the "honor and dignity of the president."

Political Career

Kurmanov served as the head of the election headquarters for the opposition forces in the West Kazakhstan region from 1998 to 1999. He was also the chairman of the strike committee at the Ural "Metallist" factory, where he organized major strikes and unsanctioned rallies.

In 2000, Kurmanov was elected chairman of the trade union committee at the Ural "Metallist" factory. He fought against the factory's bankruptcy and privatization.

In 2003, Kurmanov moved to Almaty, where he engaged in journalism and human rights activism. He was elected chairman of the Socialist Resistance movement of Kazakhstan in 2005.

Advocacy for Homeowners and Debtors

Kurmanov played a pivotal role in defending the rights of residents in Almaty suburbs who faced forced evictions and demolitions. He provided legal assistance and organized solidarity campaigns.

In 2008, he co-founded the movement "Leave the People Their Housing," which advocated for the rights of mortgage holders. He also established the Republican Public Association "Talmas" and became its chairman.

Founding of Kazakhstan 2012

Kurmanov was involved in the formation of the political movement "Kazakhstan 2012" in 2009. He actively participated in solidarity campaigns with workers from several major companies who demanded nationalization and workers' control.

Attack and Recovery

In September 2009, Kurmanov was attacked by unknown assailants who left him with a concussion, a severed finger, and several stitches in his head. Despite the injuries, he continued his activism and advocacy for social justice.
