Birth and Background

Vladimir Kovalenko, Ukrainian politician and mayor of Nova Kakhovka, was born on October 16, 1956, in the Nadtochaivka village of Cherkasy Oblast.

Early Career and Military Service

After graduating from high school in 1975, Kovalenko began his career as a technician in the forestry industry. From 1975 to 1977, he served in the Soviet Army.

Education and Career at Sokol Plant

Following his military service, Kovalenko pursued higher education at the Tambov Institute of Chemical Engineering, graduating in 1982 with a degree in Machine Building Technology. From 1982 to 2002, he worked at the Nova Kakhovka Sokol Instrument Plant, holding positions ranging from foreman to workshop manager.

Political Involvement

In October 1987, Kovalenko became a member of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU) and was elected deputy secretary of the party committee at the Sokol Plant. In 1999, he was appointed deputy director for commercial affairs, and in 2001, deputy chairman of the board of the plant.

Mayorship of Nova Kakhovka

In April 2002, the Nova Kakhovka City Council elected Kovalenko as secretary of the council. In February 2005, he became acting mayor, and in March 2006, was officially elected mayor. He was re-elected in 2010 and 2015.
