Akira Nishino: A Legendary Japanese Footballer and Coach

Early Life and Career

Akira Nishino was born on April 7, 1955, in Urawa, Saitama, Japan. After graduating from the prestigious Waseda University, he joined the Hitachi football club (now Kashiwa Reysol) in 1978. With Hitachi, Nishino achieved notable success, winning the JSL Cup in 1980 and the Japanese League Cup in 1982.

National Team Career

From 1977 to 1978, Nishino represented the Japan national team in 12 matches, scoring one goal. He made his debut for the Samurai Blue while still a student at Waseda University, in a match against Israel on March 6, 1977.

Coaching Career

After retiring from playing in 1990, Nishino transitioned to coaching, taking over at Hitachi. He went on to coach Japan's U-20 and U-23 youth national teams, leading the latter to qualify for the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta.

Kashiwa Reysol

In 1997, Nishino returned to Kashiwa Reysol as a coach and became its manager in 1998. Under his leadership, the team won the Japanese League Cup in 1999 and finished third in the J1 League in 2000. Nishino was awarded Manager of the Year for the latter achievement, but was dismissed from Kashiwa Reysol in July 2001.

Gamba Osaka

In 2002, Nishino signed with Gamba Osaka, leading them to their first J1 League championship in 2005. In 2008, Gamba Osaka won the AFC Champions League and finished third at the FIFA Club World Cup. Nishino was recognized as AFC Coach of the Year for his achievements that year.

Later Coaching Career

After extending his contract with Gamba Osaka in 2011, Nishino moved to Vissel Kobe in May 2012 but was replaced as their manager in November of the same year. He then coached Nagoya Grampus from 2014 to 2015.

Japan National Team Manager

In April 2018, Akira Nishino was appointed manager of the Japan national team after the resignation of Vahid Halilhodžić. Despite having limited preparation time and lack of substantial managerial experience, Nishino led Japan to a historic 2-1 victory over Colombia in the 2018 FIFA World Cup. The Samurai Blue also played Senegal to a 2-2 draw but were defeated 1-0 by Poland in their final group match. Japan progressed to the knockout stage as one of the four best third-placed teams, becoming the only Asian team to reach the Round of 16.
