Biography of Alain Juppé

Alain Juppé is a French right-wing politician and a prominent figure in the "Union for a Popular Movement" and later the "Union for a Presidential Majority". He served as the Prime Minister of France from 1995 to 1997 and is currently the Mayor of Bordeaux.

Early Career

Juppé began his political career in 1976 as a speechwriter for Jacques Chirac. He later became Chirac's financial assistant when Chirac was the Mayor of Paris. From 1993 to 1995, Juppé served as the Minister of Foreign Affairs in the cabinet of Edouard Balladur.

Prime Minister and Mayor of Bordeaux

From 1995 to 1997, Juppé served as the Prime Minister of France and head of the first government formed under President Jacques Chirac. However, he resigned after the socialist party won the parliamentary elections. Juppé also held the position of Mayor of Bordeaux from 1995 to 2004, simultaneously serving as both the mayor and prime minister.

Legal Troubles and Resignation

In 2004, Juppé was accused of embezzling state funds during his time as prime minister. He was convicted, sentenced to a suspended prison term of one and a half years, and banned from running for public office for ten years. As a result, Juppé was removed from his positions as mayor of Bordeaux and leader of the ruling party.

Later Career and Return to Politics

After his conviction, Juppé spent about a year lecturing at a Montreal institute in Canada. In August 2006, he returned to France and ran for both local and national parliamentary elections. Juppé was reelected as the mayor of Bordeaux in the October 2006 elections.

Ministerial Appointment and Resignation

On May 18, 2007, following the inauguration of President Nicolas Sarkozy, Juppé was appointed as the Minister of State and Minister of Environment in the cabinet of François Fillon, becoming a influential member of the government. However, he resigned just a month later after losing in the second round of parliamentary elections.

Alain Juppé has received several awards and honors throughout his career, including the Grand Cross of the National Order of Merit, the Grand Officer of the Legion of Honor, and Officer of the National Order of Quebec.
