Early Life and Education
Željka Cvijanović was born on March 4, 1967, in Teslić, SFR Yugoslavia, to a Bosnian Serb father and a Bosnian Croat mother. She completed her primary and secondary education in Teslić before pursuing a philosophy degree at the University of Sarajevo.
Later, she graduated from the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Banja Luka and continued her studies in diplomatic and consular law at the Banja Luka University's Faculty of Law. She earned a doctorate with a dissertation on "The Legal Position of the European Union in International Law."
Political Career
Before entering politics, Cvijanović worked as an English teacher. In February 2006, she became an advisor to the Prime Minister of Republika Srpska on European integration and international cooperation. Subsequently, she was elected as the head of the Prime Minister's cabinet.
Cvijanović held various positions within the Republika Srpska government, including Head of the Department of Coordination and European Integration and Expert Member of the Committee for European Integration and Regional Cooperation in the National Assembly of Republika Srpska.
In 2010, she became Minister of Economic Relations and Regional Development in the government of Prime Minister Aleksandar Džombić. In 2013, she was elected as the Prime Minister of Republika Srpska, a position she was re-elected to in 2014.
Presidency of Republika Srpska
In the 2018 Bosnian general election, Cvijanović was elected as the President of Republika Srpska. She served in this role until 2022, when she was elected as the Serbian member of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina
In 2022, Cvijanović ran for the Serbian member of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina and was elected with 51.65% of the vote. She was the first woman to be elected to this position since the country's post-war establishment.
Views
Cvijanović supports the use of special identification cards for each of Bosnia and Herzegovina's ethnic groups. She expresses sympathy for victims of war and advocates for financial support for relatives of victims in Srebrenica.
Personal Life
Željka Cvijanović is married to Aleksandar Cvijanović, and they have two sons.
