Mariastella Gelmini: A Journey in Italian Politics
Early Life and EducationMariastella Gelmini was born on July 1, 1973, in Leno, Italy. She pursued her secondary education at various schools, including Liceo Manin in Cremona, Liceo Bagatta in Desenzano del Garda, and private religious school Liceo "Aricchi." Subsequently, she graduated with honors from the University of Brescia, earning a degree in law with a thesis on regional referendums.
Entrance into Politics
Gelmini actively participated in the foundation of Silvio Berlusconi's party, Forza Italia, in 1994. She became a member of the Municipal Council of Desenzano del Garda in 1998 and was elected its President in 2000. In 2002, she joined the Provincial Administration of Brescia as an assessor for land management and later for agriculture.
Parliamentary Career
From 2005 to 2006, Gelmini served as a regional councilor for Lombardy. In 2006, she was elected to the Chamber of Deputies, where she was twice re-elected, first in 2008 and then in 2013.
Minister of Education
Gelmini held the position of Minister of Education, Universities, and Research in Berlusconi's fourth government from May 2008 to November 2011. During her tenure, she introduced significant reforms to the education system, known as the "Gelmini reform." These reforms included stricter criteria for failing grades in primary school exams.
Regional Administrative Court Decision
In April 2013, the Regional Administrative Court (TAR) of Lazio partially annulled certain provisions of Gelmini's education reform. The TAR found that the distribution of teaching hours for various subjects had been established in violation of the National Council of Public Education.
Leader of Forza Italia
In March 2018, Gelmini was elected leader of the revived Forza Italia party in the Chamber of Deputies.
Current Position
Since February 2021, Gelmini has served as Minister Without Portfolio for Regional Affairs and Autonomies in Mario Draghi's government.
Personal Life
Gelmini is married to businessman Giorgio Patelli and has a daughter, Emma. She is an avid fan of music, particularly by Vasco Rossi and Adriano Celentano. In 2011, she published a book of fairy tales, "Quando diventerai grande" (When You Grow Up).
