Biography of Alan Stuart Blinder
Alan Stuart Blinder was born on October 14, 1945, in Brooklyn, New York City. He attended Syosset High School in Syosset, New York. In 1967, he graduated with honors from Princeton University, earning a bachelor's degree in economics. A year later, he obtained a master's degree in economics from the London School of Economics. In 1971, he defended his doctoral degree in economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Academic and Professional Career
Blinder currently works as a professor of economics and public affairs at Princeton University. He also holds positions as the vice chairman of The Observatory Group and one of the directors of Princeton's Center for Economic Policy Studies, which he founded in 1990. Since 1978, he has been a research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research. Blinder is considered one of the most influential economists in the world and one of the greatest economic minds of his generation. He is also a staunch advocate for free trade.
Career in Government and Publications
In 1975, at the age of 30, Alan Blinder served as the deputy assistant director of the Congressional Budget Office. He worked in the administration of President Bill Clinton as a member of the Council of Economic Advisors from January 1993 to June 1994 and as the vice chairman of the Federal Reserve System from June 1994 to January 1996. In recent years, Blinder's academic work has focused on monetary and credit policy and central banking. His articles for a wide audience are often published in the 'New York Times' and 'Washington Post', while the 'Wall Street Journal' regularly features his economic column.
Awards and Affiliations
Blinder has been teaching at Princeton since 1971, and he chaired the economics department from 1988 to 1990. In the past, he served as the president of the Eastern Economic Association and vice president of the American Economic Association. Since 1991, Blinder has been a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a board member of the Council on Foreign Relations since 1997. He is also a member of the American Philosophical Society. Blinder's textbook, 'Economics: Principles and Policy,' co-authored with William Baumol, has undergone eleven editions since its publication in 1979. In 2009, he became a member of the American Academy of Political and Social Science for his significant contributions to the field of social sciences, particularly in the areas of fiscal and monetary policy and income distribution.
Personal Life
Alan Blinder is married, and he and his wife have raised two sons. He has also served as an advisor to Albert Gore and John Kerry during their presidential campaigns in 2000 and 2004, respectively.
