Childhood and Early Life
Alexander Ivanovich Isipin was born on October 24, 1911, in Baku to a working-class family. He completed seven years of education in Balashiv, Saratov Oblast, in 1927. Before his military service, Isipin worked at the Balashiv butter plant.
Military Service
Isipin served in the Soviet Army twice, from 1931-1933 and 1941-1945. During the Great Patriotic War, he fought on the Western, Kalinin, 1st Baltic, and 3rd Belorussian Fronts from August 1942 until the victory over Germany. He participated in the liberation of the Smolensk Oblast, Belarus, Lithuania, and Latvia, as well as the defeat of enemy forces in East Prussia.
Heroic Actions
Battle for BelarusOn June 23, 1944, Isipin led a group of soldiers in an assault during the Battle for Belarus. They captured an enemy stronghold and held it against a counterattack, enabling other battalion units to advance with minimal losses.
Crossing the Western Dvina
Isipin's group was among the first to cross the Western Dvina River near Gnezdilovichi. They eliminated the enemy's protective forces and provided covering fire for their company to cross without casualties. The connection between the 43rd and 39th armies completed the encirclement of the enemy at Vitebsk.
Liberation of Lithuania
On July 6, 1944, near Vidzy, Isipin's regiment faced stiff resistance from enemy rearguards. He led a group to infiltrate their rear and destroy their machine gun position with heavy fire. This action allowed the battalion to resume its attack and capture the defensive line.
Post-War Life
After his retirement from the Soviet Army with the rank of junior lieutenant, Isipin briefly lived in Daugavpils and worked as a swimming pool director. He later moved back to Balashiv, where he passed away on February 23, 1975.
Recognitions and Honors
Isipin was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star Medal on July 22, 1944, for his bravery and courage in the battles for Belarus. He also received the Order of Glory, 3rd Class (1944), the Medal "For Courage" (1944), the Medal "For the Capture of Konigsberg," and two other medals for his service.
