Early Life and Education
Alexander Ivanovich Smirnov was born in the Kaluga region in 1920. In 1938, he graduated from the Borisoglebsk Aviation School.
Military Career
Smirnov began his military service in the Trans-Baikal Military District. He participated in the Khalkhin Gol conflict against the Japanese in 1939, flying an I-16 and scoring six solo victories and three group victories.
World War II
With the outbreak of World War II, Smirnov joined the 126th Fighter Aviation Regiment, which participated in the defense of Moscow. He flew American P-40 aircraft and became one of the first pilots to master these foreign machines.
Despite technical issues with the P-40s, Smirnov and his fellow pilots excelled in combat. By May 1942, he had shot down 16 enemy aircraft, both solo and in group engagements.
Later in the war, Smirnov transitioned to the Yak-1 fighter and participated in the Battle of Stalingrad. He recorded four more victories, bringing his total to 30 solo and 14 group kills.
Post-War Service
After the war, Smirnov continued his service in the Soviet Air Force until 1975. In 1996, he was awarded the title of Hero of the Russian Federation for his courage and bravery.
Honors and Recognition
Smirnov received numerous decorations for his service, including the Order of Lenin, the Order of the Red Banner (twice), the Order of the Great Patriotic War 1st degree, and the Order of the Red Star. He is a member of the Council of Veterans of the 6th Air Defense Corps.
