Birth and Early Life
Born in the village of Pisoderi (now a ski resort), Florina, Greece, Athanasios Kassoumis spent his childhood in Siatista, Kozani, where his family relocated for business reasons.
Involvement in the Filiki Eteria and the Greek Revolution
In his youth, Kassoumis settled in Serres, Eastern Macedonia, to expand his father's business. There, he was initiated into the secret society Filiki Eteria and recruited several family members.
With the outbreak of the Greek Revolution in 1821, Kassoumis fought under the command of Diamantis Nikolaou on Mount Olympus and the Chalkidiki Peninsula. His father was killed in the sack of Naoussa in 1822.
After the revolution lost ground in Macedonia, Kassoumis retreated to Thessaly with a detachment from Siatista. He fought under Nikolaos Stournaros and Georgios Karaiskakis.
Siege of Mesolonghi and Heroic Breakout
In 1825, Kassoumis entered besieged Mesolonghi and participated in its defense and heroic breakout. During the breakout, his brother Demetrios was killed. Kassoumis drafted the order for the breakout under the dictation of Bishop Iosef Rogon.
Later Years and Impact
Kassoumis survived the war and left behind invaluable accounts of the Greek Revolution in his "Diary" and "Memoirs." He participated in the Battle of Piraeus in 1827 and rose through the ranks in the Greek military.
Kassoumis' birthplace Pisoderi and childhood town Siatista were liberated by the Greek army in 1912 and 1913 respectively. Statues and busts of him are found throughout Greece, and his writings remain essential references on the Greek Revolution.
