Early Life and Education
Alexa McDonough was born in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, Canada. She pursued higher education at Dalhousie University, where she earned a Bachelor's degree in Sociology and Psychology in 1965.
Political Career
Provincial PoliticsMcDonough's political journey began in 1980 when she was elected Leader of the Nova Scotia New Democratic Party. From 1981 to 1994, she served as a member of the provincial legislature.
Federal Politics
In 1994, McDonough transitioned to federal politics. She became the leader of the New Democratic Party in 1995. In the 1997 election, she secured a seat in Parliament, becoming the first NDP representative from Nova Scotia. She led the party until 2003 and remained an MP until 2008.
Social Activism
McDonough was a vocal advocate for social justice and human rights. She held the position of Professor of Sociology and Community Development and conducted research in social policy. Her activism extended to involvement in labor unions and human rights organizations.
Recognition
In December 2009, McDonough was appointed as an Officer of the Order of Canada for her "pioneering contributions as a politician, and for her lifelong commitment to progressive change and social activism."
