Early Life and Career
Anatolii Dmitrievich Kovalenko was born on March 30 (April 12), 1909, in a miner's family in Ukraine. From 1926, he worked in the coal mines of the Donbas region, starting as a laborer and later becoming a drill operator, tunnel worker, and miner at the "Red Profintern" mine in Yenakiieve.
Party and State Career
In 1929, Kovalenko joined the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. After graduating from the Moscow Mining Institute in 1936, he held various positions in the coal mining industry, including section chief, deputy chief engineer, chief engineer of a mine, and head of a mining administration in Stalinsk and Voroshilovgrad oblasts.
In 1941, Kovalenko became secretary of the Yenakiieve City Committee of the Communist Party of Ukraine. He served in the Red Army during World War II from 1941 to 1942.
Post-War Career
After the war, Kovalenko held various positions within the Communist Party of Ukraine, including secretary of the Karaganda City Committee in Kazakhstan (1942-1943), deputy head of the Department of Coal Industry (1943-1953), and head of the Department of Heavy Industry (1954-1968).
Government Service
On February 1, 1968, Kovalenko became Deputy Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Ukrainian SSR, a position he held until January 14, 1980. He then retired to Kiev, Ukraine.
