Alexander Litvinenko: Life and Career

Early Life and Education

Alexander Litvinenko was born on April 27, 1972, in Kyiv, Ukraine. He earned a degree in Applied Mathematics from the Institute of Cryptography, Communications, and Computer Science of the Russian Academy of Federal Security in 1994. Litvinenko continued his education, graduating from Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv with a degree in Law in 2009 and from the Royal College of Defense Studies in the United Kingdom in 2013.

Government Service

Early Career:

- From 1994 to 1998, Litvinenko served as an officer in the Information Security Department of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU).

- Concurrently, he taught at the Institute of International Relations at Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv from 1997 to 2005.

Senior Positions:

- From 1998 to 2007, Litvinenko held various positions at the National Institute of Strategic Studies, including First Deputy Director.

- From 2005 to 2007, he led the State Security Department at the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine (NSDC).

- Subsequently, he served as Deputy Head of the Information and Analytical Department of the SBU and Advisor to the Director of the Institute for National Security Problems at the NSDC.

Director and Deputy Secretary of the NSDC:

- In 2010, Litvinenko became Deputy Director of the National Institute of Strategic Studies, a position he held until 2014.

- From 2014 to 2019, he served as Deputy Secretary of the NSDC.

- He returned to the National Institute of Strategic Studies as Director in 2019.

Head of Foreign Intelligence Service and NSDC Secretary

- President Volodymyr Zelenskyy appointed Litvinenko as Chairman of the Foreign Intelligence Service of Ukraine on July 23, 2021.

- On March 26, 2024, President Zelenskyy appointed Litvinenko as Secretary of the NSDC.
