Alexander Wood was a Scottish-born American soccer player who made a remarkable contribution to the sport both in the United States and abroad.
Early Life and Career in the US
Wood was born in Scotland in 1895. At the age of 14, his family emigrated to the United States, where he quickly gained citizenship. He attended Emerson School of Arts and worked in a steel company while pursuing his football career. Wood began playing for the Bricklayers & Masons team in Chicago, helping them reach the National Challenge Cup final in 1928. He then joined the Detroit Holley Carburetor club.
Professional Career in the US and UK
In 1930, Wood turned professional with the Brooklyn Wanderers in the American Football League. After a brief hiatus, he moved to England in 1933 to play for Leicester City. Wood had stints with Nottingham Forest and Colchester United before finishing his career with Chelmsford City in 1939.
International Career
Wood represented the United States at the 1930 FIFA World Cup, playing three matches as a right-back. He also featured in a friendly against Brazil during the tournament's post-tournament South American tour. Wood earned a total of four caps for his adopted country.
