Alexander Vilkul: Ukrainian State and Political Figure
Early Life and EducationAlexander Vilkul was born on May 24, 1974, in Kryvyi Rih, Ukraine. He attended the Central City Lyceum in Kryvyi Rih and later obtained his education at the Kryvyi Rih Technical University. He graduated with a degree in Mining Engineering, specializing in Open-Pit Mining. Vilkul also completed his postgraduate studies at the same university.
Career in the Mining Industry
From November 1991 to 1996, Vilkul gained practical experience as an Assistant Excavator Operator at the Southern Mining and Processing Plant. He then held various managerial positions in commercial and financial departments at the Southern Mining and Processing Plant from 1997 to 2001. Vilkul further advanced his career as the Deputy CEO for Commercial and Financial Affairs at the same company from 1998 to 2001. He also worked in leadership roles at other mining companies, including the Central Mining and Processing Plant and the Northern Mining and Processing Plant.
Political Career
Vilkul joined the Party of Regions in 2003 and became the Chairman of the Krivoy Rog City Organization in November 2005. He served as a member of the Ukrainian Parliament from 2006 to 2010, representing the Party of Regions. During his time in Parliament, Vilkul held positions on the Committee for Regulatory Policy and Entrepreneurship.
In March 2010, Vilkul was appointed as the Chairman of the Dnipropetrovsk Regional State Administration. His tenure as the Governor was marked by significant infrastructure projects, including the completion of a bypass road and the opening of the Interpipe Steel Plant and the Menorah Jewish Center.
From December 2012 to February 2014, Vilkul served as the Vice Prime Minister of Ukraine, overseeing regional development, infrastructure, transport, construction, housing and communal services, tourism, electronic management, and the State Emergency Service. He was also involved in organizing major sporting events, such as the preparation for the 2015 European Basketball Championship and the bid for the 2022 Winter Olympics in Lviv.
After leaving the government, Vilkul became the Head of the Ukrainian Perspective Foundation in June 2014. He continued his political career as a member of the Opposition Bloc and was elected as a member of the Ukrainian Parliament in 2014.
Recent Years
In 2019, Vilkul ran as a candidate for the presidency of Ukraine, representing the Opposition Bloc - Party of Peace and Development. Although he received support from notable figures such as blogger Anatoly Shariy, Vilkul secured only 4.15% of the votes and finished in eighth place.
Vilkul also ran for the Ukrainian Parliament in 2019 as the second candidate on the Opposition Bloc's list but did not surpass the 5% electoral threshold.
In 2020, Vilkul ran for the position of Mayor of Dnipro from the Vilkul's Bloc - Ukrainian Perspective party. However, he finished third in the first round of voting and did not advance to the runoff.
Alexander Vilkul remains an influential figure in Ukrainian politics and continues his involvement in public and political activities.
