Ali Alatas: Indonesian Diplomat and Statesman
Ali Alatas was born in 1932 to a Hadhrami family in Indonesia. Alatas began his career in the Indonesian government in the 1970s, serving as head of the Secretariat of the Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1972 to 1975 and of the Secretariat of Vice President Adam Malik from 1975 to 1978.
Diplomatic Successes
Alatas was appointed Indonesia's Permanent Representative to International Organizations in Geneva from 1975 to 1978 and of Indonesia's Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York from 1982 to 1988. In March 1988, he was appointed Indonesia's Foreign Minister. During his tenure, he played a significant role in drafting the ASEAN Charter and in brokering peace in Cambodia.
Controversies
In 1991, Alatas was involved in the suppression of anti-Indonesian demonstrations in East Timor, which at the time was part of Indonesia. This led to accusations of human rights violations.
Later Years
Despite the controversy surrounding his role in East Timor, Alatas continued to serve as Foreign Minister until 1999. He later held positions as the UN Special Representative for Myanmar and Chairman of the President's Consultative Council. Alatas passed away in 2008 from a heart attack.
Personal Life
Ali Alatas was married and had three daughters: Soraya Alatas, Nadira Alatas Sriwijanarko, and Fawzia Alatas-Patompo.
