Biography of Ali Mohamed Ghedi
Ali Mohamed Ghedi, a veterinarian by profession, served as Prime Minister of Somalia's Transitional Federal Government from 2004.
Early Life and Education
Born in Mogadishu, Somalia, Ghedi belongs to the influential Hawiye clan. He obtained a veterinary degree from Somalia and Italy. Ghedi later pursued research and taught at the National University of Somalia.
Veterinary Career and Social Activism
After the outbreak of the civil war in 1991, Ghedi worked in the livestock industry. He led an international program combating animal diseases in Somalia. He also engaged in social activism, co-founding the Somali Non-Governmental Organization Consortium, which played a role in the peace process.
Political Career
In 2004, the Somali parliament in exile elected Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed as President. Ghedi, a relatively unknown figure, was appointed Prime Minister. He was not initially a parliament member, but a seat was vacated for his appointment.
Prime Ministership
As Prime Minister, Ghedi faced ongoing armed conflict. He survived an assassination attempt in 2005. In 2006, the Islamic Courts Union (ICU) seized control of Mogadishu. Ghedi escaped an attack on President Ahmed in September 2006.
Ethiopian Intervention and US Strikes
In late 2006, Ethiopian forces intervened against the ICU. Ghedi demanded that insurgents surrender. In January 2007, the US launched airstrikes on suspected ICU positions, alleging their ties to Al-Qaeda.
