The Two Alevisis

Arrival and Basilica Construction

In the early 16th century, two Italian architects bearing the name Alevisi traveled to Russia. The first, known as Alevis Old, arrived in 1494 and assisted in completing the Kremlin fortifications and constructing the Grand Prince's Palace and walls.

New Alevisi and the Archangels' Cathedral

A second Alevisi, referred to as New Alevisi, arrived in Moscow in 1504. His exceptional skills were attested to by Khan Mengli-Giray, who praised his abilities and urged Grand Prince Ivan III to honor him. Records indicate that New Alevisi completed the construction of the Archangels' Cathedral in 1508, which established his specialization in ecclesiastical architecture.

Subsequent Architectural Contributions

Following the Archangels' Cathedral, New Alevisi continued to design and oversee the construction of numerous churches in Moscow and beyond. In 1514, he was commissioned by Vasily III to build 11 churches within the city. His architectural influence is evident in the palaces and churches he designed, blending Italian and Russian elements.

Recent Architectural Discoveries and Debates

Attribution of Buildings

For decades, it was believed that New Alevisi was responsible for building both the Grand Kremlin Palace and the churches constructed in 1514. However, scholars have challenged this view, arguing that the Palace was likely the work of Alevisi Old.

Additional Structures

Further research has expanded the known works of New Alevisi. In the 1970s, the Peter the Metropolitan Cathedral was identified as his creation. In the 2000s, four more temples in the Alexander's Sloboda were added to his portfolio.

Unconfirmed Attributions

Various other structures have been suggested as potential works by New Alevisi, including the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin in Old Simonov, the Assumption Cathedral in Dmitrov, and the Cathedral of the Ascension Monastery in Moscow. However, these attributions remain unverified.

Artistic Legacy

New Alevisi's architectural prowess is evident in the churches, palaces, and other structures he designed. His work left a lasting impression on Russian architecture, introducing Italian influences and shaping the development of ecclesiastical and secular buildings in the 16th century.
