Amanda Corby: The Woman Who Suffers from Uncontrollable Hiccups for 11 Years

Amanda Corby

Amanda Corby, a British woman, has been a victim of relentless hiccups for the past 11 years. Hiccups may seem like a harmless condition at first glance, unlikely to cause serious harm to a person. But how easy is it to endure hiccups if they attack a person day after day for 11 years? Amanda Corby knows this sad reality all too well.

The Struggle with Uncontrollable Hiccups

For the past 11 years, Amanda Corby has been suffering from an unpleasant condition that significantly complicates her life. Approximately five times a day, she experiences episodes of uncontrollable hiccups. These episodes can last for about 10 minutes, during which Corby hiccups about once every two seconds. Over the past 11 years, Amanda has hiccuped approximately 3 million times.

Initially, hiccups may not seem like a serious problem. Few people realize the difficulties hiccups can cause on such an impressive scale. Amanda has tried various known methods and techniques to stop her hiccups, from trying to drink water or scare them away, to hypnotherapy. Unfortunately, none of these methods have had a stable effect.

The Journey of Amanda's Hiccup Struggle

Amanda's hiccup problems began in 2003. Initially, she didn't pay much attention to the hiccup episode. A day later, she became concerned, but later thought that she had simply eaten something wrong and that the hiccups would soon go away. Weeks turned into months, and even years, without any relief from the hiccups.

After six months, Amanda visited a doctor in the hope that they could diagnose her condition and find a way to stop the hiccups. However, the doctor remained completely puzzled and could not come up with anything better than the usual advice to take sips of water. The doctor was unable to determine the cause of the persistent hiccups or suggest any truly effective treatment methods.

Understanding Hiccups and their Impact

Hiccups are the result of uncontrolled and involuntary contractions of the diaphragm, a special wide muscle that separates the chest and abdominal cavities. Prolonged hiccups are usually a sign of underlying health issues such as gastrointestinal or respiratory problems. Sometimes, persistent hiccups can be caused by psychological factors, including various forms of stress.

Physiological causes can sometimes be treated with anesthetics or anti-inflammatory medications, while hypnotherapy can help with psychological issues. Ignoring prolonged hiccups is not advisable as they can lead to depression, insomnia, weight loss, and fatigue. In addition, the underlying cause of the hiccups, whether it be a physical illness or mental and emotional stress, can also pose a threat to the body.

Amanda Corby's Unsuccessful Search for a Cure

Unfortunately, Amanda Corby has not been able to find any help so far. She has tried all the doctors she could think of and, to be honest, has lost faith in the power of medicine. Hypnotherapy has provided some minor relief, but it has not solved the problem entirely, although it has helped Corby to some extent in controlling her hiccups.

Perhaps longer sessions of hypnotherapy could eliminate the hiccups forever, but Amanda no longer believes in this possibility. In fact, Corby has come to terms with the fact that she will have to live with these hiccups until the end of her days. She consoles herself with the thought that she could have contracted something even worse. Although hiccups undoubtedly complicate her life, it does not pose an immediate threat to her life.

The World Record Holder for Hiccups

The current world record for hiccuping belongs to Charles Osborne, an American man who began experiencing regular hiccups in 1922 and did not stop until 1990. It is believed that Osborne started hiccuping after being hit by a pig.
