Biography of Amiran Gamkrelidze

Amiran Gamkrelidze is a politician and the Minister of Labor, Health, and Social Protection of Georgia. He was born on January 24, 1951, in Tbilisi in a family of civil servants. He completed his education at Tbilisi Fourth Secondary School in 1967. In 1968, he was admitted to Tbilisi State Medical Institute (now known as Tbilisi State Medical University) to pursue his studies in the medical faculty, which he graduated with distinction in 1974.

Work and Academic Achievements

From 1974 to 2001, Gamkrelidze worked at the Tbilisi State Medical Institute in the Department of Allergology. He started as a senior laboratory assistant until 1978, then served as an assistant from 1978 to 1983, and as an associate professor from 1983 to 1991. In March 1991, he became a professor at the department. From 1989 to 1997, he headed the Department of Epidemiology and Clinical Immunogenetics of Allergic Diseases at the Central Scientific Research Laboratory (now the Institute of Experimental and Clinical Medicine).

In 1979, Amiran Gamkrelidze defended his candidate dissertation, and in 1990, he obtained his doctoral degree in allergology and clinical immunology at the Institute of Immunology in Moscow. He also completed two long-term scientific medical internships in Germany and Sweden in 1982 and 1987-88, respectively, focusing on allergology and clinical immunology.

Professional Associations and Government Roles

Amiran Gamkrelidze regularly participates in various conferences, symposiums, and congresses, both as a speaker and organizer. He is a member of the European Academy of Allergology and Clinical Immunology, the European Respiratory Society, and the Vice President of the Georgian Society of Allergology. He also serves on the editorial boards of several international journals.

In January 1994, Gamkrelidze was appointed as the Chairman of the Advisory Council of the Ministry of Health of Georgia and a member of the Ministry's Collegium. From 1994 to 1997, he served as the Director of the National Center for Health. In 1995-97, he was the Deputy Minister of Health, and from 1997 to 1999, he held the position of the First Deputy Minister of Health. From 1999 until December 2001, he served as the First Deputy Minister of Labor, Health, and Social Protection of Georgia.

On December 29, 2001, Amiran Gamkrelidze was appointed as the Minister of Labor, Health, and Social Protection of Georgia. He is fluent in Russian, English, and German.

Amiran Gamkrelidze is married and has two children.
