Kamala Jumblatt was a highly influential Lebanese politician who played a pivotal role in shaping the country's political landscape.

Founder of the Progressive Socialist Party and Leader of the National-Patriotic Forces

Kamala Jumblatt founded the Progressive Socialist Party (PSP), a member of the Socialist International, and became one of the most prominent secular leaders of the Druze community in Lebanon. He also led the National-Patriotic Forces of Lebanon, a coalition that advocated for political reforms and challenged the existing confessional system of governance.

In April 1975, tensions between Palestinian militants and pro-government Christian militias escalated into a full-blown civil war. After the PSP joined forces with the Palestinians in October 1975, the war took on a sectarian dimension.

In January 1976, Jumblatt and other leaders of the PSP appealed to Syrian President Hafez al-Assad for assistance. Assad sent Palestinian divisions to aid the PSP, leading to significant territorial gains by the anti-government forces.

However, a planned offensive against Christian-held areas failed in March and April 1976. In June 1976, Syrian peacekeeping forces entered Lebanon and effectively dismantled the alliance between the PSP and the Palestinians.

Faced with the collapse of his aspirations, Jumblatt withdrew from politics. On March 16, 1977, he was assassinated along with his bodyguard and driver. His death sparked a violent reprisal from the Druze community, who killed over 100 Christian civilians in retaliation.
