Anacleto Angelini
Anacleto Angelini was a Chilean businessman of Italian descent. At the time of his death, he was considered the richest man in South America, with a fortune estimated at $6 billion. He was the chairman of one of Latin America's largest conglomerates, 'Antarchile'.
Early Life and Career
Angelini was born in Ferrara, Italy, to Giuseppe Angelini and Adalisa Fabbri. He served in the Italian army for a period, participating in the Ethiopian campaign. In 1948, he moved to Chile, where he embarked on a successful business career. He quickly amassed a significant fortune through investments in fishing, forestry, mining, and fuel supplies.
Expansion and Business Success
In 1986, Angelini acquired a controlling stake in the Chilean company 'Copec'. He left control of his holding company 'Antarchile' to his nephew, Roberto Angelini Rossi. Angelini's businesses grew and prospered, thanks to his exceptional entrepreneurial skills and astute investments.
Controversies and Scandals
In 2006, a pulp mill owned by 'Celco', a company owned by Angelini, was temporarily closed. An earlier report by company lawyers on the environmental impact of the mill was found to have contained false data, suggesting that the operation was polluting the Cruces River more severely than claimed. This sparked a public outcry and led to the dismissal of the CEO of 'Celco'. The company pledged to adopt cleaner technologies, and the mill was reopened two months later, albeit with reduced capacity.
Personal Life and Legacy
Angelini resided in a modern apartment in a middle-class neighborhood in Santiago. He was married and had three children. On August 28, 2007, Angelini passed away at the Catholic University of Chile hospital due to emphysema, compounded by a severe cold. He was 93 years old at the time of his death. Angelini is remembered as one of Chile's most prominent and influential businessmen, leaving behind a vast empire of successful ventures.
