Oren Barbivai
Oren Barbivai is an Israeli criminologist and politician known for her expertise in counterterrorism.
Early Life and Career
Born in Jerusalem to Iraqi Jewish immigrants, Barbivai was one of six children. After completing her mandatory military service, she remained in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) for 25 years, rising to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel (Sgan-Aluf). She studied psychology, sociology, and criminology at Bar-Ilan University, where she earned a doctorate in criminology.
Academic Career
Barbivai became a lecturer at the Lauder School of Government, Diplomacy and Strategy at the Interdisciplinary Center (IDC) Herzliya and a visiting professor at George Washington University. She is currently a research fellow at the International Institute for Counter-Terrorism (ICT) and lectures at Israel's National Defense College.
Counterterrorism Expertise
Barbivai's area of specialization is in the study of suicide bombers. During her military service, she spent five years interrogating Hamas leader Ahmed Yassin.
Political Career
In the 2015 Knesset election, Barbivai was placed 23rd on the Likud party list, a position reserved for a candidate chosen by Benjamin Netanyahu. She was elected to the Knesset as Likud won 30 seats. In the April 2019 election, she was moved down to 46th place on the list and failed to re-enter the Knesset.
Personal Life
Barbivai is married to Reuven Barbivai, an expert in Arab affairs. The couple has three children.
