Early Life
Hryhorii Nemyriawas born on July 16, 1952, in the town of Bershad, Vinnytsia Oblast, Ukrainian SSR. His father, Sergei Kuzmich, worked at the Bershad Furniture Factory, while his mother, Maria Pavlovna, was an accountant at the same factory. After completing secondary school in Bershad, Nemyria pursued a degree in agricultural mechanization at the Lviv Agricultural Institute, graduating in 1975.
Political Career
Early Political Experience (1975-1991)Upon graduating from university, Nemyria returned to his hometown and began his political career. He held various positions, including head of the Bershad garage, chief mechanic, and first secretary of the Bershad district Komsomol committee. From 1980 to 1983, he served as secretary, and from 1983 to 1985, as second secretary of the Vinnytsia regional Komsomol committee.
Komsomol Leadership (1985-1991)
In 1985, Nemyria was elected secretary of the Central Committee of the Komsomol of Ukraine. Four years later, he became the first secretary in the first alternative election. During this time, he was also a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Ukraine.
Parliamentary Career (1990-1994)
In 1990, Nemyria was elected to the Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine's parliament, as a deputy of the first convocation. He served as chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Commission on Youth Affairs.
Party Leadership and Government Positions (1996-2019)
In 1996, Nemyria became chairman of the National Democratic Party (NDP). He later served as chairman of the Ukrainian People's Party "Sobor" (1999-2002) and the Ukrainian Republican Party "Sobor" (2002-2011). He also held various government positions, including chairman of the Vinnytsia Regional State Administration (1996-1998) and chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea (2005).
Later Career and Honors
Institute of Open Policy and Parliamentary Return (1999-2007)In 1999, Nemyria became president of the Institute of Open Policy. He returned to parliament as a deputy in 2002, serving on the Committee on State Building and Local Self-Government.
Crimean Autonomy and Opposition Leadership (2005-2012)
From 2005 to 2006, Nemyria served as deputy head of the Secretariat of the President of Ukraine. He was also chairman of the National Federation of Sports Tourism of Ukraine. In 2018, he was included on a list of Ukrainian individuals sanctioned by the Russian government.
Verkhovna Rada and Death (2014-2020)
Nemyria was elected to the Verkhovna Rada again in 2014 as part of Petro Poroshenko's bloc. He died on July 16, 2020, at the age of 68, and was posthumously awarded the Order of Freedom.
Personal Life
Nemyria was married to Olga Vasilievna, who was a pro-rector of the Kyiv National Linguistic University. They had two sons, Viktor and Pavel, and one granddaughter, Elizaveta. Hryhorii's nephew, Sergiy Berezhenko, is a member of the Verkhovna Rada.
