André Boisclair, a Canadian social democratic politician, served as leader of the Parti Québécois from November 15, 2005, to May 8, 2007. He is known for being openly gay.
Early Life and Education
Born into an affluent Francophone family, Boisclair attended Collège Jean-de-Brébeuf, where he led the student union. He later enrolled in the Université de Montréal but left after two years without completing his degree. In 2004, he graduated from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.
Political Career
Boisclair joined the Parti Québécois in 1984 and was elected to the National Assembly of Quebec in 1989. Throughout his career, he held several cabinet positions in the Quebec government, including Minister of Social Development, Minister of Immigration, and Minister of the Environment.
Leadership of the Parti Québécois
On November 15, 2005, Boisclair was elected leader of the Parti Québécois. However, after the party's defeat in the 2007 election, he resigned as leader and later gave up his seat in the legislature.
