Swiss Lottery Winner Loses Fortune in Seconds
Andreas Bürkli, a Swiss man, found himself in the enviable position of becoming a millionaire for mere seconds before losing it all. His name was drawn on the Swisslos lottery wheel, but a "technical error" quickly erased his newfound fortune.
A Moment of Triumph
Bürkli's name appeared on the digital wheel, read out by German rock star Herbert Grönemeyer on the television show Happy Day. The lucky man had won a staggering one million Swiss francs (approximately $69 million).
The Crushing Blow
However, Swisslos officials quickly apologized and informed Bürkli of the "technical error." Bürkli had not answered the required call within the designated time, but the bigger issue was that his name should never have been included in the draw in the first place.
An Overlooked Participant
The final round of the lottery involves only ten participants, despite having some spots available in the draw for additional names. Due to an error, eleven names were entered instead of ten.
A Name Out of Place
Confusingly, Bürkli's name was accidentally added to the wheel during the "hectic rush" to prepare for the draw. Ironically, he was randomly selected as the winner despite not being a legitimate participant.
A Composed Reaction
Bürkli reportedly took the news of his fleeting fortune with grace, understanding that he had not truly won anything despite his name appearing on the wheel.
