Biography of Hunter Steinitz
Hunter Steinitz is an American schoolgirl who has successfully overcome numerous difficulties caused by her rare genetic skin disorder called harlequin ichthyosis. She has even managed to find certain advantages in her challenging situation.

Struggles with Harlequin Ichthyosis
Hunter Steinitz's daily routine heavily depends on her congenital condition, harlequin ichthyosis. This rare genetic disease has drastically disrupted the formation process of her skin. Steinitz's skin is extremely thick, regularly peeling off in large patches, and is painfully reactive to external stimuli. She cannot close her eyes, has to wear a wig because her hair cannot penetrate the thick skin, and is constantly at risk of dehydration. Harlequin ichthyosis greatly impairs Steinitz's mobility, making it difficult for her to bend her fingers and overall complicating her life.

Medical Advancements and Daily Routine
Previously, most individuals with various forms of ichthyosis did not survive past their first year due to the absence of necessary protective skin layers, leaving their skin extremely vulnerable to external threats such as bacteria and viruses. Although medicine has not yet found a cure for ichthyosis, several methods have been developed to alleviate the symptoms. Steinitz's daily routine begins with a long bath, which provides moisture to her skin. She then applies a series of lotions and oils to soften her thick and inflexible skin.
Challenges at School and Support
School was once very challenging for Steinitz, particularly during physical education classes that required constant and painful physical contact. Additionally, her unique appearance made it difficult for her to fit in and be accepted by her peers. However, over time, Steinitz learned to stand up to bullies and gained loyal friends. Her parents, Mark and Patti, a restaurant worker and a school teacher respectively, provided unwavering support and did everything possible to uplift their daughter.
Embracing Self and Motivational Speaking
Through the challenges she faced, Steinitz learned to love her body and embrace her uniqueness, realizing that harlequin ichthyosis shaped her into the person she is today. She developed resilience and found genuine and reliable friends. Steinitz has already completed high school and plans to attend university in September. Alongside her studies, she intends to engage in public speaking and draw attention to the issues faced by individuals with conditions like hers. Steinitz understands that the way others react to people with ichthyosis is a significant problem. Many people stare at those who look different, and others are hesitant to engage, fearing contagion (which is completely unfounded). By educating people to perceive them as ordinary citizens and explaining that genetic diseases cannot be transmitted, Steinitz aims to significantly improve the lives of her fellow sufferers.
