Early Life and Family
Born on August 28, 1991, in Tuzla, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Andrej Pejic grew up with an older brother. His mother, Jadranka, is Serbian, and his father, Vlada, is Croatian. After his parents divorced shortly after his birth, Pejic moved to Serbia with his mother, brother, and grandmother during the Bosnian War.
Childhood in a Refugee Camp
Despite the hardships faced in the refugee camp near Belgrade, Pejic fondly recalls his childhood as a happy one. He had friends, attended school, and enjoyed playing outside, creating a sense of community within the camp.
Emigration to Australia
In 1999, Jadranka Pejic decided it was no longer safe to remain in Serbia and moved the family to Melbourne, Australia, as political refugees.
Discovery and Modeling Career
Pejic was first approached by a modeling agency while working at McDonald's. He signed with 'Storm Model' in London in February 2010 and quickly rose to prominence. By June 2010, he was participating in shows for Jean-Paul Gaultier, John Galliano, and Paul Smith in Paris.
Androgyny and Breaking Gender Norms
Pejic's extreme androgyny sets him apart in the modeling industry, allowing him to seamlessly transition between male and female clothing presentations. In January 2011, he showcased both men's and women's collections for Jean-Paul Gaultier and participated in Marc Jacobs' menswear show in Paris.
Controversial Cover Shoot and Media Attention
In May 2011, Pejic made headlines when he appeared topless on the cover of 'Dossier Journal'. The photograph, which featured long blond hair styled in Mozart-era curls, sparked controversy with some bookstores refusing to display it without opaque wrapping.
Debates and Rumors
Pejic's appearance in 'FHM's' list of "100 Sexiest Women in the World" sparked debates about gender identity and sexual orientation within the magazine's online community. While rumors of Pejic's homosexuality have persisted, he has declined to comment on his sexual preferences.
