Early Life and Education
Frederick Windsor Bertie was born on March 2, 1938, in London, England. His father, James Bertie, was a financial agent and Naval officer during World War II, while his mother, Jane Crichton-Stuart, was the daughter of the 4th Marquess of Bute. From 1946 to 1950, Bertie served as an officer in the Scots Guards. He then pursued commercial activities before studying Modern History at Benedictine College and the University of Oxford.
Career in the Sovereign Military Order of Malta
In 1956, Bertie joined the Sovereign Military Order of Malta as a Knight of Honour and Devotion. He progressed through the ranks, becoming a member of the Sovereign Council in 1981. In April 1988, he was elected as Grand Master of the Order.
As Grand Master, Bertie holds the rank of Prince and is recognized as the head of state of the Order. His spiritual rank is equivalent to that of a cardinal. He has led the Order in relief efforts and diplomatic missions worldwide.
