Prince Andrew of Hungary, Prince of Galicia

Prince Andrew of Hungary, also known as Prince Andrew of Galicia, was the son of King Andrew II of Hungary and a pivotal figure in the power struggles of the 13th-century Kingdom of Galicia.

Early Life and Marriage

Andrew was born into the royal family of Hungary. In 1218, his father arranged for him to marry Isabella, the daughter of King Leo II of Cilician Armenia. The marriage was intended to secure Andrew's inheritance of Leo's kingdom, as Leo had no male heirs. However, Leo died shortly after, and Isabella's hand was given to Bohemond IV, Prince of Antioch.

Arrival in Galicia

Andrew's father had previously attempted to install his younger son, King Coloman of Galicia, on the Galician throne. After facing military setbacks, Andrew II signed a peace treaty with Mstislav the Bold of Galicia in 1221. Mstislav agreed to marry his daughter Maria to Andrew.

Reign as Prince of Galicia

In 1227, Mstislav granted Andrew the city of Przemyśl and, in 1228, the remainder of Galicia. However, Mstislav's death in the following year disrupted his plans to unite forces with Daniel of Galicia and the Polovtsians against Andrew.

Andrew's reign was marked by conflict with local boyars who supported him and the majority of the population who preferred Daniel of Galicia as their ruler. In 1229, Daniel was invited to rule Galicia and laid siege to the city. Andrew was captured but later released.

Conflicts and Death

In 1231, Daniel's dispute with Alexander of Belz provided an opportunity for the boyars to invite Andrew back to Galicia. Daniel, seeking revenge, formed an alliance with Vladimir of Kiev and the Polovtsians.

In the ensuing battle, Andrew died during the siege of Galicia. Daniel subsequently assumed control of the city and established himself as the sole ruler of Galicia.
