Biography of Andrey Efimov
Andrey Semenovich Efimov, a doctor of medical sciences and professor, was born on November 10, 1928, in the village of Zinovevka in the Saratov region. His father, Semen Pavlovich Efimov (1884-1935), and mother, Maria Andreevna Efimova (1902-1992), raised him. He married Elena Konstantinovna Efimova (born in 1933) and they have a son, Dmitry Andreevich Efimov (born in 1961).
Medical Career
In 1952, Andrey Efimov graduated from the medical faculty of the Gorky State Medical Institute, and in 1955, he completed his clinical residency. After defending his candidate dissertation, he was appointed as the chief therapist of a medical detachment in one of the new construction projects in Siberia (Krasnoyarsk). Dr. Efimov organized several medical expeditions to study goiter and compiled a map of endemic goiter in the Krasnoyarsk region. He actively participated in annual conferences at the Krasnoyarsk Medical Institute, and his articles were published in the "Proceedings of the Conference."
In 1958, Andrey Efimov started working as an assistant at the Department of Therapy of the Gorky Medical Institute. In 1964, he successfully defended his doctoral dissertation and, in 1965, was selected through competition to lead the diabetes clinic at the newly organized Institute of Endocrinology and Metabolism of the Ukrainian Ministry of Health (Kyiv). Since 1992, he has been the deputy director of the Research Institute on the clinical side.
Contributions and Achievements
In 1985, Professor Andrey Efimov established the Department of Endocrinology at the Kyiv Medical Institute (now University) and served as its head until 1992. In 1993, he organized the Department of Endocrinology at the Ukrainian Institute of Advanced Medical Education (now the Kyiv Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine) and concurrently headed it until 2003.
Throughout his career, Andrey Efimov developed and implemented new diagnostic tests, devices, and drugs in practice. He created a clinical classification of diabetes and diabetic angiopathies and proposed new treatment methods. Some of his diagnostic tests include the inversion of hormone and metabolite levels in response to glucose load in individuals with prediabetes, as well as the development and implementation of a glucose express analyzer - a glucose meter with indicator strips.
His research on cellular mechanisms and insulin-receptor interactions allowed him to identify subtypes in type 1 diabetes. He also discovered the role of counter-insulin hormones, lipid peroxidation, oxidative stress, and immune disorders in the pathogenesis of angiopathies. Andrey Efimov's research on the hyperfunction of the polyol pathway in glucose metabolism led to the creation and implementation of a new angio-protective drug called isodibut for the treatment of angioneuropathies, cataracts, and encephalopathies.
He conducted extensive examinations of individuals involved in the liquidation of the consequences of the Chernobyl accident and discovered that one-quarter of them had type 2 diabetes. Andrey Efimov determined the mechanisms of hyperinsulinemia and/or insulin resistance in tissues of these patients.
Publications and Recognition
Andrey Efimov has published 540 scientific works, including 26 monographs, 2 textbooks, a handbook, and a guide. He is the author of 18 patents. He has supervised the academic training of 14 doctors and 50 candidates of sciences.
He is an active member of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR (1988), National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (1992), and Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine (1993). In 1982, he was awarded the State Prize of the Ukrainian SSR for his participation in the writing of the textbook "Internal Diseases." Andrey Efimov is a distinguished scientist and technologist of Ukraine (1998), a member of the European Diabetic Federation (1990), vice-president of the Ukrainian Diabetic Association (2000), and an expert in endocrinology for the World Health Organization (1992). He has been awarded the Order of Honor (1984) and the President's Sign III degree (2001), as well as various medals.
