Dr. Irina Abelskaya: A Medical Journey and Personal Odyssey
Early Life and FamilyIrina Abelskaya was born in Brest, Belarus in 1965 to a close-knit family. Raised with a strong work ethic and a love of education, she and her brother both pursued careers in medicine, following in the footsteps of their grandmother and mother, Dr. Lyudmila Andreyevna Postoyanko, who became the Minister of Health of the Republic of Belarus.
Medical Education and Career
Abelskaya graduated from the Minsk Medical Institute in 1988 with a degree in pediatrics. She completed her internship and embarked on a career in medicine and research. In 2004, she earned a Candidate of Medical Sciences degree in osteochondrosis of the spine, followed by a Doctor of Medical Sciences degree seven years later.
Personal Life and Family
Before her life became intertwined with the public eye, Abelskaya was married and had a son, Dmitry, from her first marriage to Yevgeny. The marriage ended in divorce. Dmitry followed his parents' footsteps and is now an ophthalmologist at a medical center.
In 1994, Abelskaya became the personal physician to Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko. Their relationship extended beyond the professional realm, and in 2004, she gave birth to a son, Nikolai, who received the surname Lukashenko. Despite Lukashenko's ongoing marriage, his wife, Galina, was living separately at the time and did not assert herself as the first lady.
Nikolai became a constant companion of his father at official events, while his mother's identity remained shrouded in secrecy. Abelskaya accepted the unspoken rules and has not made any public statements about her son or their relationship.
Career Progression
Abelskaya began her career as a pediatrician at the Minsk Polyclinic No. 25. She subsequently worked at the city's endocrinology dispensary and later specialized in ultrasound diagnostics at the Minsk Diagnostic Center. In 1994, after Lukashenko came to power, she was selected as his personal physician due to her youthful appearance and professional demeanor.
In 2001, Abelskaya became the head physician of the Republican Clinical Medical Center, known as the "lechkomissiya," which traditionally treated high-ranking officials and celebrities. Following the birth of Nikolai, she briefly retired from public view, but in 2009, she resumed her position as head of the "lechkomissiya."
Abelskaya is also a member of Belarus's Interdepartmental Commission, the Department of Radiation Diagnostics, and the Republican Scientific and Practical Center for Oncology and Medical Radiology in Borovlyany.
Current Role and Daily Routine
As of 2020, Abelskaya continues to serve as head physician of the Republican Clinical Medical Center of the Presidential Administration. She takes pride in working with exceptional individuals and overseeing a team of renowned physicians who utilize state-of-the-art equipment.
Abelskaya maintains a rigorous daily routine, beginning her day at 5:30 AM with a 5-kilometer walk with her dog. In her spare time, she enjoys cycling. At work, she emphasizes efficient time management and delegation, believing that leaders with poor delegation skills face unnecessary challenges.
