Biography of Angela Braly

Angela Braly is the former CEO, director, and president of Wellpoint, an insurance company. Born in 1962 in Dallas, Texas, Braly completed her JD from the Southern Methodist University School of Law and her business degree from Texas Tech University.

Before joining Wellpoint in 1999, Braly had a successful partnership with the law firm Lewis, Rice & Fingersh Partner. In January 1999, she became the general counsel of RightCHOICE Managed Care Inc., now known as Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Missouri, focusing on legal strategy and becoming a key strategist for the company. During her time there, she created funds to provide affordable insurance options for people with low incomes and implemented initiatives to improve access to healthcare.

In August 2003, Braly became the president and CEO of the Missouri plan, where she managed all aspects of the business and worked towards meeting the needs of the company's clients by reducing costs and improving healthcare services. She then served as executive vice president, general counsel, and chief public relations officer of Wellpoint starting from April 2005. Despite her young age and limited business experience, Braly became one of the most powerful figures in the healthcare industry.

Braly was responsible for government relations, legal affairs, corporate communications, marketing, and social initiatives at Wellpoint. Under her leadership, the company achieved sales figures of 56 million dollars, surpassing industry giants like PepsiCo and Archer Daniels Midland. She proved that private investment could serve the insured individuals by implementing powerful healthcare reforms.

On June 1, 2007, Braly became the CEO and president of Wellpoint. She was recognized as one of the "25 Most Influential Women in Business-2000" and "Top 25 Women in Modern Healthcare-2007."

Braly is married to Douglas, and they have three children. She actively participates in various charitable organizations.
