Biography of Rolf Gerling
Rolf Gerling, the famous German entrepreneur and former head of the largest insurance company Gerling Konzern, was born on December 15, 1954, into a family of entrepreneurs. His father, Hans Gerling, founded a small insurance company in the early 20th century, which eventually passed on to Rolf.
After completing his secondary education and obtaining his high school diploma, Rolf Gerling embarked on practical work at the Hamburg Bank. From 1974 to 1979, Rolf continued his education, this time at the university. Later, he further enhanced his qualifications and educational level, earning a doctoral degree in economics in 1986.
Leadership at Gerling Konzern
Three years after joining Gerling Konzern, Rolf Gerling became a member of the executive board, where he led the executive group. He then assumed the position of head of the risk and environmental protection department. However, when Rolf's father passed away in August 1991, the question arose regarding the company's management structure. As Rolf was not the sole heir and unable to make such decisions independently, he transitioned from the executive board to the supervisory group and assumed its leadership.
Financial Difficulties and Controversial Deal
After his father's death, Gerling Konzern faced some financial difficulties, which were accompanied by numerous challenges. For instance, in 1992, when Deutsche Bank decided to acquire 30% of Gerling Konzern's shares for one billion Deutsche marks, Rolf Gerling opposed the deal. Despite the fact that the proposed amount could have helped him settle debts, repay loans, and strengthen the company's financial base, Rolf refused to collaborate with Deutsche Bank and decided not to sell a portion of the company.
Current Endeavors
However, in 2005, Rolf Gerling eventually sold his stake in Gerling Konzern to Talanx Group and is currently primarily engaged with the research company Gerling Academy for Risk Research. With his own capital estimated at approximately 1.5 billion dollars, Rolf Gerling is recognized as one of the wealthiest individuals in the world, according to Forbes magazine.
