Biography of Angelo Dundee

Angelo Dundee, born Angelo Mirena, was a renowned boxing coach and trainer who was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1994. He was born in 1921 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Italian immigrant parents. His older brother, Chris Dundee, also had a passion for boxing, which influenced Angelo's own interest in the sport.

During World War II, Angelo served in the army and began actively participating in boxing, often acting as a second during amateur fights between soldiers. It was during this time that he started to gain experience and develop his skills as a trainer. After his military service, Angelo followed his brother to New York City, where Chris was establishing himself as one of the world's top boxing managers.

Working together, the Dundee brothers gained experience and influence in the boxing world, eventually training some of the best fighters in the sport. Angelo began to attract promising fighters, such as Bill Bosio, and later trained Carmen Basilio, who became a world champion in both the junior middleweight and middleweight divisions.

However, Angelo's greatest success came in the 1960s when he became the trainer for a young and relatively unknown boxer named Cassius Clay, who later became world-famous as Muhammad Ali. When Clay first approached Dundee, claiming to be a future world champion, Angelo took a chance on him and invited him to come train. It soon became clear to Dundee that Clay possessed exceptional talent, and he guided him to become an Olympic champion at the age of 18 and a professional world champion at the age of 22.

Together, Angelo and Muhammad Ali went on to have legendary fights against Sonny Liston and George Foreman. In 1974, Foreman accused Dundee of tampering with the ropes during their fight, but later the two formed a surprising alliance and worked together. Despite their age, Angelo at 73 and Foreman at 45, the duo achieved success, with Foreman winning the WBA and IBF titles in 1994.

Angelo Dundee remained Ali's trainer until the end of 1980, experiencing many triumphs and setbacks together. In addition to Ali, he trained many other talented fighters, including Sugar Ramos, Luis Rodriguez, Ralph Dupas, Willie Pastrano, Jose Napoles, and Sugar Ray Leonard.

In 1994, Angelo Dundee was permanently honored by being inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame. Throughout his career, he trained a total of 15 world champions, earning him the title of the "greatest trainer of all time."

Even after retiring from active coaching, Angelo continued to provide advice and guidance to boxers and trainers. He passed away on February 1, 2012, in Tampa, Florida, at the age of 90. Just a month before his death, he attended Muhammad Ali's 70th birthday celebration in Louisville, Kentucky.
