Biography of Teresa Gouveia
Teresa Patria Gouveia was born on July 18, 1946. She graduated from the University of Lisbon and obtained a degree in History. Gouveia is a member of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and has been an active politician since 1985, serving as a parliamentary deputy.
Before entering politics, Gouveia had a successful career as the director of the most popular library in Lisbon and also worked as a chief consultant for the Social Democratic newspaper "Publico". During her tenure in parliament, she focused on cultural and environmental issues, dedicating many years to these causes.
From 1993 to 1995, Gouveia served as the Minister of Environment and Natural Resources in the government of Anibal Antonio Cavaco Silva. Her appointment as the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs marked the first time a woman held this position in Portugal.
One of Gouveia's key priorities as the Minister of Foreign Affairs is addressing the challenges faced by Portuguese communities abroad, particularly in former colonies such as Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde Islands, and Macau. She aims to strengthen ties with these communities and ensure their well-being and integration.
