Biography of António Guterres

António Manuel de Oliveira Guterres, the Prime Minister of Portugal, was born on April 30, 1949, in Lisbon. He attended the Higher Technical Institute in Lisbon from 1966 to 1971, specializing in electrical engineering. In the 1970s, Guterres worked in the technical secretariat of the Cabinet of Ministers, specifically in the Central Planning Department. In 1973, he became the director of the Department of Industrial and Technical Planning in the Cabinet of Ministers. He was later appointed as the deputy minister on two occasions. During the same years, Guterres taught systems theory and signal processing in telecommunications and economics for engineers at the Higher Technical Institute in Lisbon.

In 1974, Guterres joined the Socialist Party of Portugal and quickly became a member of the party's National and Political Committees. In 1977, he was elected to the National Secretariat of the party. In 1976, he became a member of Parliament for the Socialists, and from 1988 to 1991, he led the parliamentary faction of the Socialist Party.

Since February 1992, Guterres has been the leader of the Socialist Party of Portugal and the Vice President of the Socialist International, an organization that includes more than 100 socialist and social democratic groups and parties from around the world. Since October 1995, he has been the Prime Minister of the XIII Constitutional Government of Portugal. A socialist and a Catholic, Guterres represents the pro-European left-wing Christians who oppose the right-wing Christians in Portuguese politics who are skeptical of Europe. He is a widower and has two children. Guterres enjoys traveling, going to the cinema and opera, and is passionate about history, particularly the history of the Middle Ages.
