Anna Diamantopoulou: A Greek Political Trailblazer
Early Life and Political BeginningsAnna Diamantopoulou was born in Kozani, Greece, in 1959. Despite training as a civil engineer, she embarked on a political career early on. In 1984, she became Governor of Kastoria, one of the youngest in Greek history. She held this position until 1986, when she was appointed Secretary for Education.
Government Service and Business Leadership
In 1993, Diamantopoulou became President of the Greek Organization of Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises and Handicrafts (EOMMEX). She also served as Deputy Minister for Development, responsible for privatizations and industry restructuring. Upon her return to Greece, she became a prominent opposition figure.
PASOK Leadership and Language Advocacy
In 2001, Diamantopoulou led a wing within the Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK) that advocated for English as a second official language in Greece.
Ministerial Appointments
From 2009 to 2012, Diamantopoulou served as Minister of Education and Religion. She is currently the Minister of Economy and Competitiveness of Greece.
