Anna Piaggi was an Italian fashion journalist, editor, and stylist, recognized as a style icon in the world of fashion. Born in Milan, Italy, she grew up in a family deeply connected to the fashion world. Her grandfather taught Latin and Greek, her father was a manager at the renowned department store "La Rinascente," and her mother worked as a personal secretary to the store's president. This upbringing exposed Anna to the world of fashion from an early age.

Tragedy struck when Anna's father passed away when she was just 7 years old. Her mother sent her to a strict boarding school near Milan, where she received a rigorous education. However, this environment also fostered her rebellious nature. After completing her studies, Anna did not return home. Instead, she worked briefly as a governess before embarking on a journey to explore the world. She traveled extensively, learning languages and taking odd jobs as a nanny and dishwasher. At that time, there were no hints of her future eccentricity.

Anna's career in the fashion industry began in 1960 when she became an editor for the Italian magazine "Arianna." It was during this time that she met photographer Alfa Castaldi, whom she married two years later. After their marriage, Anna and her husband settled in New York City, where she continued her editorial work. In the early 1980s, she became the editor-in-chief of "Vanity" magazine.

Throughout her career, Anna collaborated with renowned figures in the fashion industry, such as designer Karl Lagerfeld, who chronicled her outfits and journalistic activities, and shoe designer Manolo Blahnik, who created many of her iconic shoes. She also worked closely with British milliner Stephen Jones, who crafted numerous hats that became an integral part of her image. Over time, Anna developed her unique, vibrant, and eclectic style.

Anna Piaggi became a style icon and a pioneer of fashion eccentricity. Her distinctive blend of diverse and sometimes provocative and extravagant outfits solidified her status as a fashion icon. Throughout her career, she never appeared in public wearing the same outfit twice. In the late 1980s, Piaggi served as a creative consultant for Italian Vogue.

In 2006, a retrospective exhibition titled "Anna Piaggi: fashion-ology" was held at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. The exhibition showcased items from her personal collection, including 2,586 dresses and 256 pairs of shoes. Anna Piaggi passed away on August 7, 2012, at her home in Milan.
