Early Life and Education
Annette Schavan (born April 10, 1955) is a German politician who served as Federal Minister of Education and Research from 2005 to 2013. She studied pedagogy, philosophy, and Catholic theology at the University of Bonn and the University of Düsseldorf.
Political Career
Minister of Culture, Youth, and Sports of Baden-Württemberg (1995-2005)
In 1995, Schavan was appointed Minister of Culture, Youth, and Sports of the German state of Baden-Württemberg.
Federal Minister of Education and Research (2005-2013)
Following the 2005 federal elections, Schavan became the Federal Minister of Education and Research, replacing Edelgard Bulmahn of the Social Democratic Party.
Plagiarism Allegations and Resignation
Allegations of Plagiarism (2012)In 2012, an anonymous blogger discovered evidence of plagiarism in Schavan's 1980 doctoral dissertation. The university launched an investigation.
Revocation of Doctoral Degree and Resignation (2013)
On February 6, 2013, Schavan was stripped of her doctorate due to plagiarism. She subsequently resigned as Education Minister. Chancellor Angela Merkel accepted her resignation on February 9, 2013.
