Early Life and Military Career

Birth and Family

Viktor Kurmanovyh was born on November 23, 1871, in Berehomet (present-day Chernivtsi Oblast, Ukraine) to a German colonist father and a Ukrainian mother.

Education and Military Training

He graduated from the Vienna Cadet School and the Vienna Higher Officer School. During World War I, he commanded battalions in the 58th Stanislav and 55th Berezhany regiments on the Russian and Italian fronts, rising to the rank of lieutenant colonel in the Austro-Hungarian Army.

Ukrainian Military Service

Commanding Officer in the Galician Army

In December 1918, Kurmanovyh joined the Galician Army, where he commanded the "Khirev" combat group, the 8th Sambor Brigade, and the 3rd Galician Corps on the Polish front.

Kiev Offensive and Beyond

In 1919, he led an army group in the Kiev offensive operation. Later that year, he became commander of the 3rd Corps, fighting against both the Bolsheviks and the forces of Denikin.

Commander of the Brigade in the UPR Army

In 1920, Kurmanovyh commanded a brigade in the UPR Army. His group broke through to Czechoslovakia in August 1920, where he was interned in the UGA camps in Liberec.

Later Life

Veteran Activism and Memoirs

From 1924, Kurmanovyh lived in Vienna, where he became active in UGA veteran societies and wrote memoirs.

Ukrainian General Council of Combatants

In 1941, he became a member of the Ukrainian General Council of Combatants.

Death

Viktor Kurmanovyh passed away on November 13, 1945, in Vienna.
